An ankle sprain is an injury of the ligaments surrounding the ankle joint. It is important to rule out a fracture based on patient history and using the Ottawa Rules.
There are a few components to managing a simple sprain. These include:
Conservative management: (aka the RICE)
Compression with an ACE wrap
Possible referral to physical therapy if patient is not recovering function
NSAIDS (or Tylenol if the patient cannot take NSAIDs)
If very severe, may consider a couple of days of narcotics (Percocet, Vicodin)
