What is the treatment for an ankle sprain?

An ankle sprain is an injury of the ligaments surrounding the ankle joint. It is important to rule out a fracture based on patient history and using the Ottawa Rules.

There are a few components to managing a simple sprain. These include:

Conservative management: (aka the RICE)
Compression with an ACE wrap

Mechanical support:
Ankle brace/lace-up
Possible referral to physical therapy if patient is not recovering function

Pain management:
NSAIDS (or Tylenol if the patient cannot take NSAIDs)
If very severe, may consider a couple of days of narcotics (Percocet, Vicodin)
